Morrell named to Strathcona Professor endowed post

, recently appointed as the Strathcona Professor in the Field of Mechanical Engineering, is interested in robotics and machines that connect software and hardware with human perception and action.

A 1986 Yale College graduate, Morrell joined the Yale faculty in 2006 as assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science after serving for six years as director of systems engineering for Segway Inc., creators of the two-wheeled dynamically stabilized vehicle called the Segway Human Transporter. He is the director of the recently established Center for Engineering Innovation and Design.

Prior to his work at Segway, Morrell worked for Dean Kamen at Deka Research and Development as the lead control engineer on the IBOT, a mobility device that allows disabled people to climb stairs and stand at eye-level by using dynamic stabilization technology.

Morrell will remain in the post until June 30, 2016.
