Double Degree Program by Yale-NUS College and the NUS Faculty of Law

The Bachelor of Arts (Honors)-Bachelor of Laws (Honors) Double Degree Program offered by Yale-NUS and the NUS Faculty of Law is a five-year program offering a broad liberal arts education as well as professional training to prospective lawyers. It aims to combine the best liberal arts and legal professional training to produce exceptional graduates who are able to apply the strengths of a broad-based education to the specific demands of a professional career.

It also aims to attract, among others, the best students who would pursue law at NUS Law and to offer them broader training in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences than has traditionally been available. The program will accept its first intake of students in August 2013.

Here are some key features of the Double Degree Program:

• For the first four years of the program, students will live at Yale-NUS and enjoy the full benefits of the residential college experience. Students will spend their entire first year at Yale-NUS, taking the Common Curriculum and a specific law-related elective. In years two-four, students will split their time between the Common Curriculum, elective courses at Yale-NUS, and core and elective law courses at NUS Law’s Bukit Timah campus.

 • A Semester Abroad option is available for students to pursue one semester in their fourth year on exchange to any of NUS Law’s exchange partners in North America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia.

• The final year will be devoted to modules with cross-application to liberal arts and law, including a final-year capstone research and writing project in a relevant topic combining liberal arts and law.

• Students will be admitted through a rigorous selection process undertaken by Yale-NUS and NUS Law, including separate written tests and interviews. Students will have to apply separately to both Yale-NUS and NUS Faculty of Law and be accepted by both schools.

• After five years of study, students will be awarded with a Bachelor of Arts (with Honors) degree from Yale-NUS College and a Bachelor of Laws (with Honors) degree from the NUS Faculty of Law.

• Graduates of this Double Degree Program will be qualified to be admitted to the legal profession as advocates and solicitors of the High Court of Singapore. NUS Law alumni have also been admitted to practice in Malaysia, several Commonwealth jurisdictions, and some U.S. states.

• About 15 to 25 students are expected to be admitted into the Double Degree Program each year.
