Eastern Mediterranean sacred images are focus of exhibition

“People, Piety, and Sacred Power in the Eastern Mediterranean” — an exhibition of photographs illustrating human interactions with the sacred in Istanbul (Constantinople), Mount Sinai, Hosios Loukas (Greece), and Cyprus — is currently on display at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).

“From the magnificent Hagia Sophia to paintings of individuals in a humble village church, the images in the exhibition document the ways in which the Orthodox faithful sought, and still seek, to proffer piety in exchange for sacred power,” say the organizers of the exhibition.

Curated by Linda Safran and Vasileios Marinis, the exhibit will remain on view through March 2 at ISM, 409 Prospect St. It is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
