Shannon Murdoch's 'haunting' play wins 2011 Yale Drama Series

A play about a violent crime that forever linked the lives of four small-town residents is the 2011 winner of the Yale Drama Series.

Shannon Murdoch’s “New Light Shine” is “raw, haunting, richly poetic and deeply emotional,” says judge John Guare.

As the Yale Drama Series winner, in addition to the reading, Murdoch will receive the David Horn Prize of $10,000, and “New Light Shine” will be published by Yale University Press.

“New Light Shine” also won the 12in2011 Playwriting Award and was workshopped at the National Play Festival 2011 in Sydney. Murdoch’s other plays include “One Cloud,” “Everything in Between” and “Act Accordingly.” The playwright has received writing fellowships from Australian Council for the Arts, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in California, Bundamon in New South Whales and Hothouse Theatre in Victoria. Her plays have been produced in the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The Yale Drama Series is the annual playwriting competition sponsored by Yale University Press and Yale Repertory Theatre and funded with support from the David C. Horn Foundation.
