The stage of the Summer Cabaret at Yale will transform back and forth between Prospero’s fantastical island to a lovesick forest to the battlefields of England as an ensemble of actors performs a rotating repertory of three works by Shakespeare this season.

Now in its 37th year, the Summer Cabaret will also offer free workshops and discussions on the three plays being performed: “The Tempest,” “As You Like It” and “Rose Mark’d Queen.”

The season opens on Thursday, June 23, with “The Tempest,” directed by Jack Tamburri. A tale of first love, betrayal and emancipation, this work follows the pursuits of Prospero on an island as he punishes his enemies, rewards his friends and introduces his cloistered daughter to a new world. The play will run through Aug. 12.

Louisa Proske directs “As You Like It,” which runs July 7-Aug. 14. Among the characters in this Shakespearean comedy are a banished duke, a love-struck rube and a girl who is pretending to be a boy pretending to be a girl. The play follows Rosalind and Celia through a forest where love is anatomized, magnified, satirized, versified and eulogized in all of its forms.

“Rose Mark’d Queen,” which is adapted from “Henry V,” “Henry VI” (Parts 1, 2 and 3) and “Richard III,” follows a young Frenchwoman, schooled in betrayal and ambition by the British court, as she becomes a wife, a mother, a killer and a queen. This production runs July 7-Aug. 13 and will be directed by Devin Brain.

The Immersion Series of free workshops are led by the ensembles before every performance. Each program lasts about 45 minutes and begins at 6:45 p.m. for the evening performances and at 12:45 p.m. for the matinees. View www.summercabaret.org/immersion to learn more about each workshop series.
