Time to choose or change: Annual Benefits Enrollment

Yale offers competitive benefits as part of a long-standing commitment to the health and well-being of its staff and faculty. Annual Enrollment is the one time of year that employees have the opportunity to select or change their 2011 healthcare benefits (i.e., medical, dental and vision).

Beginning Dec. 1 and continuing through Dec. 15, those who are eligible for benefits are encouraged to review their current benefits and make changes directly through the University’s portal at www.yale.edu/portal. For instructions, click on “My Benefits” under the “My Yale” box for those who are staff members, or under the “Yale Benefits” box for those who are faculty members.

Information about benefit changes and options will be provided this month, beginning at Benefit Fairs (see below), which offer the opportunity to discuss benefit options with Human Resources staff. There will also be a chance to meet with representatives from Yale Health, Aetna, Delta Dental, EyeMed, Magellan and Yale’s WorkLife Program.

Check e-mail for a “What’s Changing” brochure and Benefits Guides (rate changes included, which will be sent as downloadable PDFs.

Medical coverage for eligible dependents

As part of Health Care Reform changes, medical coverage for eligible dependents will now extend to the end of the month in which a dependent reaches age 26.

Deadlines and changes for Flexible Spending Accounts

During Annual Enrollment, staff and faculty can enroll or re-enroll in a Flexible Spending Account via the My Benefits website (www.yale.edu/hronline/mybenefits).

Contributions to these accounts are deducted from paychecks before taxes are calculated. The money is held in an account until employees submit eligible dependent and/or health care expenses for reimbursement; then, the money that has been set aside is used to reimburse them.

Over-the-counter medicine reimbursement: Staff and faculty who are enrolled in a flexible spending account for healthcare for 2010 or are considering enrolling for 2011 should be aware that beginning Jan. 1, 2011, Health Care Reform changes require that a prescription will be necessary to receive reimbursement for over-the-counter medicine through a Flexible Spending Account. For further information, read the article online in www.yale.edu/working or call the Employee Service Center at 203-432-5552.

For those who are enrolled in Flexible Spending Accounts for this year, now is the time to check account balances to get the most out of this benefit. To continue participation, faculty and staff must re-enroll for the following year during Annual Enrollment.

Those with questions about Annual Benefits Enrollment or Flexible Spending Accounts should contact the mployee Service Center at 203-432-5552 or employee.services@yale.edu.
