MEDIA ADVISORY: Yale School of Medicine Community Block Party Celebrating Bicentennial
On Saturday, October 16, the Greater New Haven community is invited to join the physicians, staff, students and alumni of Yale School of Medicine (YSM) for festivities marking YSM’s 200th birthday.
“Community Day” will take place from noon to 4pm on Cedar Street between Congress Avenue and York Street. Cedar Street will be closed to traffic during this time, and will become a pedestrian walkway.
Activities for children that day will include face painting, games, student entertainment, hands-on demonstrations and birthday cake and cupcakes.
For adults, Yale-New Haven Hospital will sponsor health screenings and offer educational information on areas including stroke, cardiac, cholesterol, diabetes, vision, mental health, oral health, stress management and children’s nutrition. There will also be other educational presentations.
One of the highlights of the day will be a tour at 1:30 pm of the new Cushing Brains exhibit, which sits on the lower level of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar Street. The exhibit consists of more than 400 glass jars filled with human brains and tumor specimens as well as an extensive archive of patient photographs – bequeathed by Dr. Harving Cushing, a Yale physician considered the father of neurosurgery.
