With just a few hours of work, students, faculty and staff will make a long-lasting impact on the New Haven community when they join together to participate in the Yale Day of Service on Saturday, Oct. 9.

The event allows all members of the Yale community — along with their spouses, partners and teenage children — to volunteer their time to a local community service agency. They will team up to assist with projects that include painting at Christian Community Action, the Creative Arts Workshop and the YMCA; planting trees for Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven and the Urban Resources Initiative; gardening at Edgerton Park, the Fair Haven Community Garden Clinic and Leila Day Nursery; reading to youngsters and teens at the Wellspring Educational Foundation; planting flowers on Yale’s West campus; and organizing clothes and food for distribution by Loaves and Fishes.

“Our goal is to have 300 people doing two-and-a-half to three hours of community service, for a total of 750-900 hours donated by Yale people to New Haven nonprofits,” says Lisa Brandes, director of the Office of Student Life at the McDougal Center.

Check in and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS), 320 York St. Volunteers will then be bused to the service sites, and will work from 10 a.m. to about 1 p.m. They will then be treated to lunch at HGS.

“It will be a great opportunity to meet other members of the Yale community who share your interests,” say Shauna King, vice president for finance and business operations, and Bruce Alexander, vice president for New Haven and State Affairs and Campus Development, in a letter to students, faculty and staff. “… Just a few hours of your day can make a significant difference.”

Yale Day of Service is hosted by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and is sponsored by McDougal Graduate Student Life, Dwight Hall, the Graduate Student Assembly, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, the University Chaplain’s Office, the Office for Diversity and Equal Opportunity, the Office of New Haven and State Affairs, the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Business Operations, and Local 34 and 35 of UNITE HERE.
