‘Pink’ events launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Physicians and staff members from the Yale Cancer Center (YCC) will host a “Pink Picnic” and form a human “pink ribbon” during the first week of October to launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event that aims to raise awareness about the disease and support research into its prevention and cure.
BJ’s Wholesale Club and YCC will hold a “Pink Picnic” at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the BJ’s Membership Club at 1046 N. Colony Rd. in Wallingford.
The ‘Pink Picnic” is a celebration of breast cancer survivors and the innovative breast cancer research being done today. Speakers will include a breast cancer survivor who will share her inspirational story and experience with the disease, and a physician from YCC, Dr. Anees B. Chagpar, who was recently appointed director of the Yale Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. A renowned surgeon and international leader in breast surgery, Chagpar is nationally recognized for her continued efforts in breast cancer care and research.
The event is free and open to everyone, including breast cancer survivors, their families, friends, and colleagues. All attendees will receive a complimentary lunch and gift bag.
Throughout October, BJ’s will be sponsoring a Pink Ribbon Campaign to raise money for breast cancer research. The sale of “pink” merchandise — such as Folgers® Coffee, Pink Ribbon Clothing, and Q-tips® — in their stores will generate a donation to support breast cancer research at participating National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (NCICCCs).
Yale Cancer Center will be a recipient of a portion of those proceeds as the only NCICCC in Connecticut.
Human “pink ribbon”
Physicians and staff of YCC and Yale School of Medicine will join construction workers from EMCOR to don pink hard hats and form a human “pink ribbon” as part of an effort to remind women of the importance of getting screened for breast cancer.
The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, in Amistad Park, located on Cedar Street between Washington Avenue and Amistad Street. YCC is teaming up with EMCOR and Tucker Mechanical for this event, which is free and open to the public.
