The physicians and staff of Yale Cancer Center will be holding two events during the first week of October, to launch “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” Press and media, as well as members of the public, are invited to attend. Every October, major breast cancer organizations join forces to raise awareness of the disease and support research into its prevention and cure.

Wednesday, October 6th, 11:45 A.M.: BJ’s Wholesale Club and Yale Cancer Center will hold a “Pink Picnic” at the BJ’s Membership Club in Wallingford, Connecticut. The event is free and open to everyone, including breast cancer survivors, their families, friends, and colleagues. Throughout October, BJ’s will be sponsoring a Pink Ribbon Campaign to raise money for breast cancer research. The sale of “pink” merchandise, such as Folgers® Coffee, Pink Ribbon Clothing, and Q-tips®, in their stores will generate a donation to support breast cancer research at participating National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (NCICCCs). Yale Cancer Center will be a recipient of a portion of those proceeds as the only NCICCC in Connecticut. The ‘Pink Picnic” is a celebration of breast cancer survivors and the innovative breast cancer research being done today. Speakers will include a breast cancer survivor who will share her inspirational story and experience with the disease, and a physician from Yale Cancer Center, Anees B. Chagpar, MD. Dr. Chagpar was recently appointed Director of the Yale Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and is nationally recognized for her continued efforts in breast cancer care and research. She is a renowned surgeon and international leader in breast surgery. All attendees will receive a complimentary lunch and gift bag.

Friday, October 8th, 9:30 A.M.: Physicians and staff of Yale Cancer Center (YCC) and Yale School of Medicine will join construction workers from EMCOR to don pink hard hats and form a human “pink ribbon,” to launch National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and remind women of the importance of getting screened for breast cancer. The event will take place at Amistad Park on Cedar Street in New Haven. Photographers will be allowed roof access to take photos or video of the event. YCC is teaming up with EMCOR and Tucker Mechanical for this event.
