Yale School of Architecture Announces Fall Public Events

This fall the Yale School of Architecture will offer more than a dozen free lectures, symposia and panel discussions that are open to the public. They include a two-day symposium on the great lighting designer Richard Kelly, which coincides with a retrospective exhibition on his legacy; the first screening of a documentary about renowned teacher and scholar Vincent Scully; and the School’s regularly scheduled lecture series, which provides a public forum for some of the architectural world’s most respected authorities and influential practitioners.

The following is a schedule of events, which, unless otherwise noted, take place in Hastings Hall of Paul Rudolph Hall, 180 York Street, and begin at 6:30 p.m.

October 1–2: Symposium
Titled “The Structure of Light: Richard Kelly and the Illumination of Modern Architecture,” this symposium presents aspects of Kelly’s work in its historical context and examines its legacy in architectural illumination today. Kelly’s collaboration with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Louis I. Kahn, Philip Johnson and many others at Mid-Century helped define the nocturnal imagery of modern architecture. Historians and practitioners from Europe, New Zealand and the United States will discuss the roles of artificial light and daylight as “building materials” in modern and contemporary architecture.
