Yale Hosts International Conference on Antisemitism
More than 90 internationally renowned scholars and intellectuals of diverse expertise will convene on the Yale campus from August 23-25 for a three-day conference examining antisemitism in the world today.
Titled “Global Antisemitism: A Crisis of Modernity,” the conference will publicly launch the recently established International Association for the Study of Antisemitism (IASA), announced Charles Small, director of the Yale Initiative for the Interdisciplinary Study of Antisemitism.
The IASA is a professional association representing scholars and intellectuals everywhere, regardless of their school of thought, scientific approaches, academic discipline or ideological opinion. The goal of the IASA is to advance knowledge of the origins and manifestations of antisemitism throughout the world.
Highlights of the event include a Gala Dinner and keynote address on August 23 and a public reading of Doron Ben-Atar’s satirical play “Peace Warriors” on August 24. For a full schedule of conference events, visit http://www.yale.edu/yiisa/crisisofmodernityconf82010.htm
“There is a growing upsurge of antisemitism globally,” Small said. “This historic conference will be the largest gathering of leading scholars to examine the issue. Special attention will be placed on the contemporary context, so that we can begin to grasp what is taking place and why.”
Among the experts attending the conference are Irwin Cotler, McGill University and former Canadian Minister of Justice; Ruth Wisse, Harvard University; Bassam Tibi, University of Goettingen; Milton Shain, University of Cape Town; Menahem Milson, Hebrew University; Jeffrey Herf, University of Maryland; and Meir Litvak, Tel Aviv University.
The deadline for registration, which is open to the public and the media, is August 8. For more details, visit http://www.regonline.com/register/checkin.aspx?EventId=866040. For media registration, contact Lauren Clark at 203-432-5239 or lauren.clark@yale.edu.

The conference is partly funded by the Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies and Research at the University of Cape Town and is held in association with the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; the Stephen Roth Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism and Racism at Tel Aviv University; the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism at Indiana University, and the Pears Institute for the Study of Antisemitism at Birkbeck College, University of London.
