Winners of Inaugural Travel Grants To Collaborate on Global Health Research

Seven faculty members will be establishing new health research collaborations around the world as the first recipients of travel awards from Yale’s Global Health Initiative (GHI).

The Global Health Faculty Travel Awards are funded by a Global Health Framework Program grant awarded by the Fogarty International Center. The faculty and their projects are:

Achyuta Advaryu, assistant professor, Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) — “Improving Bed Net Use in Women Using Social Networks in Tanzania.”

Luis E. Bedregal, assistant professor, Department of Psychiatry — “Mental Health Research in an Andean Region of Peru.”

Kaveh Khoshnood, assistant professor, YSPH — “Gay Youth and HIV/AIDS in Lebanon.”

Sukanya Narasimhan, research scientist, Section of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine — “Anopheles Gut Bacteria — New Players in Resistance to Plasmodium.”

Lubna Pal, assistant professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences — “Improving Maternal Morbidity in Pakistani Women through Vitamin D Supplementation.”

Melinda Pettigrew, associate professor, YSPH — “Invasive Pneumococcal Disease in Brazilian Slum Children.”

David Walker, instructor, Department of Pediatrics (Emergency Medicine) — “Improving Capacity for Pediatric Trauma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi.”

GHI was established in May of 2009 by President Richard C. Levin to promote and encourage interdisciplinary global health education and research. It is directed by Elizabeth Bradley, professor of public health, and is the first initiative housed at the Jackson Institute within the MacMillan Center. Robert Dubrow, associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor at YSPH, is principal investigator for the Framework Program grant.
