Mustachioed men of Movember call for support as end of November approaches

Their mustaches are growing in, and so far, they have raised over $2,500 — and Movember isn’t yet over.

As a matter of fact, The Handsome Dans are encouraging everyone in the Yale community to support their team before November (and Movember) comes to a close.

The Handsome Dans is a team of Yale affiliates who are participating in this year’s Movember campaign to raise money in support of men’s health. Twenty-five Yale employees and students have enlisted the support of sponsors as they grow mustaches (better known as “mo’s” during the drive) during the month of November. All proceeds go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong Foundation, who then use the money to fund research into prostate and testicular cancer.

Yale’s participation in Movember began last year, when Nick Aberle, a postdoctoral associate in molecular, cellular and developmental biology, formed a campus team and raised more than $2,000. Aberle, who is from Australia, says the Movember campaign is very popular in his home country, and he wants to do his part to help out in the worldwide cause.

On the Movember website, Aberle has posted some pictures of himself and some colleagues as their mustaches are growing in. His Handsome Dans have just broken into the top 100 teams in the United States in terms of money raised this year.

Among this year’s participants is Saybrook College master Paul Hudak, also a professor of computer science.

Those interested in sponsoring the mustachioed Handsome Dan team or a specific member of the group can do so at http://us.movember.com/mospace/127289.
