Grey Reappointed as Nursing School Dean

Margaret Grey has been reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of the Yale University School of Nursing (YSN), effective July 1, President Richard C. Levin has announced.

Grey, the Annie Goodrich Professor at YSN, has been at Yale since January of 1993. During her first term as dean, she led the school to a number of accomplishments: achieving the maximum, 10-year reaccreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education; establishing a Ph.D program and seeing its first graduates; and reaching the school’s capital campaign fundraising goal well ahead of schedule.

“Faculty and staff alike expressed strong support for Dean Grey’s reappointment,” Levin wrote in a message to the YSN community. “The School of Nursing and the University are fortunate to have the services of this outstanding leader.”

A pediatric nurse practitioner, Grey has been principal investigator for a number of funded research studies and has had a major impact on the study of the management of chronic illnesses. She has served in leadership positions with the American Medical Association, American Diabetes Association and National Institutes of Health.

She is an elected fellow and member of a number of organizations, including the Institute of Medicine, Society of Behavioral Medicine, and American Academy of Nursing. Her many honors include the Outstanding Nurse Scientist Award from The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science in recognition of the impact her research has made on health care and nursing practice, and a 2009 Legacy Laureate Award from the University of Pittsburgh.

Prior to assuming the deanship on Sept. 1, 2005, she served as associate dean for scholarly affairs. She was the founding director of the National Institutes of Health-funded Center for Self and Family Management and a related pre- and post-doctoral training program, as well as YSN’s doctoral program. Previously, she held progressive academic and administrative appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, an M.S.N. in pediatric nursing from Yale, and a doctorate in public health and social psychology from Columbia University.

“It is an honor for me to serve as dean in this school which has been so influential,” Grey stated. “The faculty, students and staff are at the heart of what makes the school a dynamic, engaging and forward-thinking place to be. I am looking forward to continuing to work with and educate the next generation of nursing leaders and scientists and to seeing the school reach new heights.”
