Bruce Ackerman to discuss his book about civil liberties at Yale Club event

As part of its spring speaker series, the Yale Club of New Haven will feature Bruce Ackerman at noon on Tuesday, April 7.

The event will take place at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Ave.

Ackerman, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, will present themes from his book, “Before the Next Attack: Preserving Civil Liberties in an Age of Terrorism.”

New departmental chairs are among the appointments announced by President Levin

President Richard C. Levin announced the following faculty appointments:

Thomas Kavanagh, the Augustus R. Street Professor of French, as chair of the Department of French;

Scott Miller, professor of chemistry, as chair of the Department of Chemistry;

Alexander Nemerov, professor of the history of art, as chair of the Department of the History of Art; and

A. Douglas Stone, the Carl A. Morse Professor of Applied Physics, as chair of the Department of Applied Physics.

All appointments will be for three years, effective July 1.

Levin also announced the appointment of Susan C. Stokes, the John S. Saden Professor of Political Science, as chair of the Department of Political Science. Her term will be for three years, effective July 1. During her forthcoming leave of absence, Stephen Skowronek, the Pelatiah Perit Professor of Political and Social Science, will be the acting chair during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Levin also announced one-year extensions for two appointments:

William Kelly, the Sumitomo Professor of Japanese Studies, as chair of the Department of Anthropology, through June 30, 2010; and

John Treat, professor of East Asian languages and literatures, as chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, through June 30, 2010.


Fortes will take part in National Symposium at Shanghai Conservatory

Allen Forte and Madeleine Forte will be theorist and artist-in-residence, respectively, at the Shanghai Conservatory during the last week of October.

Fifty conservatories and universities will participate in the National Symposium. Forte’s keynote address will be on “Music Theory Yesterday and Today” with references to music in Asia. He will lecture on Schoenberg and offer workshops on his pitch-class-set theory. Madeleine Forte will perform works by Chopin and Messiaen.


Benefit exhibition for Yale Cancer Center survivorship clinic features photographs of New Haven ‘saints’

An exhibition and performance to benefit the Connecticut Challenge Survivorship Clinic at Yale Cancer Center will be held on Friday, March 27.

Titled “The Patron Saints of New Haven,” the charity event will begin at 6 p.m. with an opening reception for an exhibition of photography by Lipgloss Crisis at Channel 1, 220 State St.

The show, which will be on view through May 3, features images of artists, activists and other people in New Haven who have made a difference to the community. There will be framed pictures of each “saint” as well as “prayer cards” available for purchase.

Lipgloss Crisis is a New Haven painter/photographer whose close friend — one of the bike riders in the Connecticut Challenge fundraiser for the clinic — has cancer.

After the reception at 9 p.m., there will be a party at Café Nine featuring the bands Broken, Atrina and The Kings. Café Nine is located down the street from the exhibition at 250 State St.


Ice hockey player Helen Resor selected for U.S. national team

Helen Resor, senior defenseman on the women’s ice hockey team, has been selected as one of 32 candidates for the 2009 U.S. women’s national team. She will attend a tryout/training camp at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y., March 24-30.

Resor, who was the first Yale women’s ice hockey player to compete in the Olympics when she played for Team USA in 2006, is vying for a spot on the 21-player roster. Those players will help the United States defend its world title at the 2009 Inter­-national Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship in Hameenlinna, Finland, in April.
