Former U.N. Under-Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor To Speak at Yale

Shashi Tharoor, chairman of Dubai-based international investments company Afras Ventures and former under-secretary-general of the United Nations, will be the speaker at the 16th Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale Lecture on March 4.

Shashi Tharoor, chairman of Dubai-based international investments company Afras Ventures and former under-secretary-general of the United Nations, will be the speaker at the 16th Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale Lecture on March 4.

His talk is titled “India and China: Competition, Co-operation, Conflict?” It will be held at 4 p.m. in Luce Hall Auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Ave. It is free and open to the public

The lecture is sponsored by the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, Yale Law School and the Yale School of Management.

Tharoor was the official candidate of India for the succession to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006. In 1978, he joined the staff of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, and served successively as a senior adviser to the secretary-general, and as the U.N. under-secretary-general for Communications and Public Information.

Tharoor is also the award-winning author of nine books, as well as hundreds of articles, op-eds and book reviews in a wide range of publications, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune, Time, Newsweek and The Times of India. He has served for two years as a contributing editor and occasional columnist for Newsweek International. Since April 2001, he has authored a biweekly column in The Hindu and since January 2007 in The Times of India.

The Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale was established in 1992 to support endeavors among specialists in the intersection between international relations, international law, and the management of international enterprises and organizations. Previous lecturers have included Michael Doyle, Samantha Power, Nicholas Kristof, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Senator Sam Nunn, Tom Friedman, Senator Gary Hart, Sadako Ogata and Mary Robinson.
