The Yale University Police Department (YPD) will once again host its popular Citizen's Police Academy, beginning on Tuesday, October 7.

The Yale University Police Department (YPD) will once again host its popular Citizen’s Police Academy, beginning on Tuesday, October 7.

The Citizen’s Police Academy is free of charge and open to members of the Yale and New Haven community. Participants will gain an increased understanding and awareness of police operations and responsibilities, focusing on investigative services (CSI vs. Reality); patrol procedures; personal safety; Eli, the bomb detection dog; a tour of the facility; state-of- the-art communications technology; and firearms training. The course incorporates classes and hands-on activities.

The academy will be held on Tuesdays, 6–8:30 p.m., from October 7 to November 11. Classes will take place at the Yale University Police Department at 101 Ashman Street.

Previous sessions of the academy have been a tremendous success. Comments from attendees included: “All of the sessions contained a great mix of both interesting and educational information… and it was fun to be able to see the real world version [of a police department] compared to…TV,” and “I perceive the Police Department as a much friendlier place than I thought…and was very impressed with the high level of dedication and professionalism everyone there has.” One participant said the academy “was wonderful… a well balanced, upbeat, fun experience… a gift to the community” and another noted, “We have an amazing police force, dedicated to public service.”

Registration is a two-step process. Initial registration is on-line. Once registered, YPD will contact each applicant to arrange for a criminal history check. Upon completion of the process, an email confirmation will be sent by YPD verifying placement in the academy.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applications are due by Friday, September 26. Space is limited, and participation in the class is on a first-come, first-served basis.
