Collages Exhibit Showcases Works by Pulitzer Prize winner and Yale artist

Works by two Yale-affiliated artists — one a Pulitzer Prize-winning faculty member and the other a staff member at the School of Drama — will be featured in the exhibition “Piecing It Together: Collages by Donald Margulies and Deborah Berman.”

The show will be on view in the Allan & Leah Rabinowitz Gallery at Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St., from September 15 through October 26.

An opening reception featuring a discussion with the artists will be held at Slifka Center on September 24, 4–6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Margulies is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of several internationally produced plays including Dinner with Friends, Brooklyn Boy, Collected Stories, Sight Unseen, and Shipwrecked! An Entertainment—the latter recently staged at Long Wharf Theatre.  He has also won two Obie Awards, the Sidney Kingsley Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Playwright, and an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  Prior to becoming a playwright, Margulies studied visual arts at Pratt Institute and State University of New York-Purchase, and was a professional graphic designer in New York.  He has not exhibited his collages publicly since his B.F.A. thesis show at Purchase in 1976.  Margulies is an adjunct professor of English and theater studies at Yale.

Berman has been the director of development and alumni affairs at Yale School of Drama and Yale Repertory since February 2005 and is currently a lecturer in theater management.  She studied art history at Barnard College (Columbia University) and pursued her M.A. in art history at the University of Delaware.  She has worked at the Guggenheim Museum, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Corcoran Gallery and College of Art, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and  the Yale University Art Gallery. She studied art at the Art Students League and Parsons School of Design in New York City, and has shown her work in Washington, D.C., and New Haven.

The Allan & Leah Rabinowitz Gallery is open to the public and free of charge Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, home to Young Israel House at Yale and Yale Hillel,  serves Yale students, faculty and staff as well as members of the greater New Haven community by providing social, religious and cultural programming, including lectures, conferences, films and arts events.
