Yale Galleries To Host Joint Open House

Members of the public are once again invited to explore the University’s world-class art collections while enjoying the sound of music during the Yale Art Museums’ Open House, being held 5:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The annual event, now in its fourth year, is sponsored by the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art.

As in previous years, Yale’s celebrated a capella groups will perform at various locations throughout the two museums. This year’s scheduled performers include Proof of the Pudding, Shades, The Yale Alley Cats, The Duke’s Men, Whim ‘n Rhythm and The Baker’s Dozen.

Throughout the evening, there will be tours led by Yale student guides, who will offer insights about the works on view. The guides and museum staff will also be on hand to converse with visitors and describe upcoming events and exhibitions.

This year, the Yale Art Museums’ Open House will again coincide with “First Thursdays” in New Haven, when downtown shops and restaurants will be open late with special events.

The two University museums are located within a block of each other. The Yale University Art Gallery, at 1111 Chapel St. (corner of York St.), has more than 185,000 objects from around the globe in its collections, dating from ancient times to the present day. The Yale Center for British Art, at 1080 Chapel St. (corner of High St.), houses the largest collection of British Art outside the United Kingdom. Both buildings were designed by celebrated American architect Louis Kahn.
