In Memoriam: Marc G. Pypaert, Directed Electron Microscopy Facility
Marc G. Pypaert, director of Yale’s Electron Microscopy Core Facility and a research scientist in cell biology, died of brain cancer on July 28 at Connecticut Hospice. He was 45 years old.
As part of the Center for Cell and Molecular Imaging, the Electron Microscopy Core Facility Pypaert led provides assistance in an array of electron microscopy techniques to investigators within the School of Medicine and the Yale research community. His cell biology research was published in roughly 70 professional scientific publications.
Born in Ath, Belgium, on April 3, 1963, Pypaert graduated from the University of Notre-Dame in Belgium with a B.S. degree in biochemistry and earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Dundee in Scotland. He worked at various universities throughout Europe before coming to Yale nine years ago. He was also an assistant investigator at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.
An accomplished photographer, Pypaert was particularly interested in creating abstract images at great magnification. He exhibited his work for the past several years at City-Wide Open Studios. He sang in church choirs around the world and wrote and played classical guitar music.
Pypaert was a past president of the Connecticut Electron Microscopy Society and the Ridge Top Swim and Tennis Club. He was a member of the Frontline Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Deloyer Pypaert, and five children, Celine, Elise, Laure, Nathan and Manon, all of Hamden. He also leaves his mother, Simone Hubin of Belgium; and his siblings and their spouses, Isabelle and Jean-Pierre Perrin of Mery-Sur-Oise, France; Philippe Pypaert and Chiara Pizzinato of Treviso, Italy; Veronique and Jean-Pierre Cornet of Habaru, Leglise, Belgium; Emmanuel and Veronique Pypaert of Salle, Belgium; and Jean-Benoit and Julie Pypaert of Fernelmont, Belgium.
