Yale’s Bass and Walpole library renovations win national recognition for design
Two recent library renovation projects have won national recognition.
The Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington, which opened to visitors last summer, won an Award of Merit in the building addition category from the Society of College and University Planning. The awards celebrate the promotion of higher education through excellent planning and design. The library is also a certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building.
The Bass Library, which opened last October, is featured in the magazine American Libraries’ 2007 design showcase issue. Celebrating exceptional new and renovated library facilities, the issue highlights 27 libraries across the country that have improved reader access to information and services through design and architecture.
Law School announces new appointments
The Law School recently announced five new appointments.
Douglas Kysar joins the faculty as a professor of law, focusing mainly on the areas of environmental law and products liability. He previously taught torts as a visiting professor at the UCLA School of Law.
Thomas W. Merrill joins as professor of law, specializing in property, environmental law, administrative law, eminent domain and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was the Charles Keller Beekman Professor of Law at Columbia University.
Legal historian Nicholas Parrillo ‘04 joins as associate professor of law and will teach in the fields of administrative law and American legal history.
Scott J. Shapiro ‘90 joins as a professor of law and philosophy. He previously held a joint appointment with the University of Michigan’s law school and philosophy department. His areas of specialty include jurisprudence, criminal law, constitutional law and theory, and family law.
Linda Greenhouse ‘78 M.S.L., Pulitzer Prize-winning legal writer and Supreme Court reporter for The New York Times, joins as the Knight Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence and Joseph M. Goldstein Senior Fellow. She will advise on the Law and Media Program, lecture, conduct research and participate in various Law School activities, including the Supreme Court Clinic.
Photographs by recent M.F.A. graduates featured in exhibition at Philadelphia’s Gallery 339
Gallery 339 in Philadelphia will present an exhibition by the recent recipients of the M.F.A. in photography at the Yale School of Art.
The graduates are Samantha Contis, Jen Davis, Bryan Graf, Richard Mosse, Bradley Peters, Sasha Rudensky, Sarah Stolfa, Marley White and Suyeon Yun. The exhibition will be held July 11 through Sept. 6. An opening reception will take place 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 11.
The show exhibited initially at Yale and later at Danziger Projects in New York. The photographs range “from deeply personal explorations of self to expansive, chaotic visions of American society.”
