Forum on Legislation to Create a Commission on Indian Affairs in Connecticut
The Native American Cultural Center at Yale University will hold a discussion titled “Presenting and Representing Indians in Connecticut: A public forum about HB 5141, An Act to Create A Commission on Native American Indian Affairs,” on April 2, 7 p.m., at the Native American Cultural Center, 297 Crown St.
The forum will focus on legislation currently working its way through committees in the Connecticut General Assembly. Panelists will be Trudie Lamb Richmond (Schaghticoke), Mikki Aganstata (Eastern Cherokee) and Sherman Paul (Maliseet). Moderators will be Alyssa Mt. Pleasant, assistant professor of American Studies and history at Yale, and J. Kehaulani Kauanui, associate professor of anthropology
and American studies at Wesleyan University.
This event is free and open to the Yale University community and the general public. It will be of special interest to American Indian people who reside in the state or who are members of the five tribal nations whose homelands and reservations are located here. The goal of the forum is to educate people about this grass-roots effort by American Indian people and their non-Indian allies in Connecticut.
The forum is co-sponsored by the Native American Cultural Center, the American Studies Program, the Program in Ethnicity, Race, & Migration, the Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers and Borders and the Public Humanities Initiative.
