The Yale College term bill for the 2007–8 academic year will be $45,000, an increase of 4.5 percent over the current charges for tuition and room and board.
Yale College tuition for 2007–8 will be $34,530 and the charge for room and board will be $10,470. Tuition in the current academic year is $33,030 and the cost of room and board is $10,020, for a total of $43,050.
Over 41% of Yale’s undergraduates receive need-based scholarship aid from the University itself, and an additional 22% receive financial assistance from other sources. The average annual need-based scholarship award from Yale is $23,500. Yale’s annual budget for financial aid to undergraduates is $60 million, double the amount that was expended in 2000.
Since 1966, the college has admitted all students without regard to their ability to pay for their education—a policy called “need–blind” admissions—and has met the full demonstrated financial need of all students. All financial aid provided by Yale is based on need.
The significant increase in the undergraduate financial aid budget in recent years is due to a number of changes in Yale’s aid program, including the elimination of the family contribution for families with annual incomes below $45,000. Yale has also reduced the students’ own expected contribution toward the cost of their education, extended full financial aid to international students and begun providing undergraduates on financial aid with grant support for summer study and internships abroad.
