Five Distinguished Yale Faculty Win Guggenheim Fellowships
Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation recently named five Yale faculty members as recipients of 2005 Fellowships.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by United States Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son. The Foundation offers Fellowships for advanced professionals to further their development as scholars and artists by supporting their engagement in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions. Appointments are ordinarily made for one year, and the amounts of the grants are adjusted to the needs of the Fellows, considering the purpose, resources and scope of their plans

What distinguishes the Guggenheim Fellowship program is the wide range in interest, age, geography, and institution of those it selects from applications in 79 different fields from the natural sciences to the creative arts. In a time of decreased funding for individuals in the arts, humanities, and sciences, the Guggenheim Fellowship program has assumed a greatly increased importance. The year 2005 Fellowship winners include 186 artists, scholars, and scientists selected from over 3,000 applicants for awards totaling $7,112,000.
