University Properties is pleased to welcome Paul Richard’s, L.L.C., to 268 York Street, at the corner of York and Elm in the Broadway Retail District. Paul Richard’s offers men’s and women’s dress and casual shoes, fine leather accessories, and personalized service. Paul Richard’s will welcome shoppers until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

An official opening press conference will take place Thursday, April 15, at noon. New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and Bruce Alexander, Yale vice president for New Haven and State Affairs, will attend.

Paul Richard’s is owned by Paul Cuticello and Jim Fitzgerald. Both men are lifetime New Haven residents, and both men have enjoyed lengthy careers as retailers in the Broadway district. Jim Fitzgerald will maintain his position as manager of J. Press, where he is fulfilling his 20th year of service, including 10 years as store manager. Paul Richard’s co-owner Paul Cuticello will manage the store, bringing over 25 years of experience as the store manager at former tenant Barrie Ltd. “With decades of experience between us, Paul and I believe we are in a position to serve our customers in the manner they expect and deserve,” Jim said. “We know that staying open until nine will be a welcome convenience for our customers, many of whom are busy professionals who shop after work.”

Paul Richard’s will offer classic styles of footwear in brands with reputations for craftsmanship and comfort. They will also offer their own private label custom-made shoes. “We are lucky to have built relationships with fine shoe craftspeople in both England and New England,” said Jim, “and we look forward to providing their products to our customers at affordable prices.” Paul Richard’s will also carry leather accessories such as pocket books, portfolios and brief cases, and eventually carry men’s sports and business apparel on the second floor of 268 York. The name of the store is a combination of Paul’s first name and Jim’s middle name.

Barry Cobden of Campus Customs, who has been a retailer on Broadway for 40 years, says, “I am delighted to welcome Paul Richard’s to Broadway. Their high-quality merchandise, and their reputation for serving the New Haven and regional community with expert customer service will contribute to their success and the success of the district.” Phil Cutler, owner of Cutler’s Compact Disks, a Broadway mainstay for over 50 years, said, “For countless years, I’ve known Paul as a model merchant and a great person. Paul was an integral part of the Broadway family, and it is great to welcome him back home.”

David Newton, Director of University Properties, stated, “Jim and Paul are the kind of experienced, entrepreneurial business owners who understand what it takes to run a successful store. Paul Richard’s will enhance the vibrancy of the district, and it has been a pleasure partnering with them to bring their high-standards for quality and service to Broadway.”

Paul Richard’s is the seventh independently owned business University Properties has opened on Broadway in the last two years.
