Yale Nursing Highlights Role in Global Health Care

The Yale School of Nursing (YSN) will host a reception and program in New York City January 14 to highlight the role of their nursing research and practice in improving global health care.

The reception, which is by invitation only, will take place at 6 p.m. at the Yale Club of New York City, 50 Vanderbilt Avenue, N.Y., New York. YSN faculty and students will discuss their research and clinical work abroad. Program topics will include:

* Curbing the spread of the AIDS epidemic in China.

* Barriers to medication compliance for imprisoned and released prisoners with active tuberculosis in Russia.

* Obstetrical practices in rural Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.

* Assessment of knowledge, attitudes and practices surrounding childhood diarrhea in India.

* Community health in Estelli, Nicaragua, and community health in Oaxaca, Mexico.

“The need for competent health care professionals who can care for culturally diverse populations in this country and abroad is growing at an ever increasing rate,” said Pamela Minarik, YSN professor and director of the Office of International Affairs. “To meet this need, YSN has recently expanded its international presence with the launching of the YSN Office of International Affairs. The new initiative supports YSN’s historical and contemporary international partnerships and strengthens the school’s leadership in international health care and education, with particular emphasis on collaboration in the translation of knowledge into practice.”

In the past year, YSN students and faculty have conducted research and clinical activities in over 20 countries.
