President Richard C. Levin today congratulated Yale Divinity School Dean Rebecca S. Chopp on her appointment as president of Colgate University and thanked her for her service to Yale.

“Colgate is very fortunate to attract Rebecca, who is both a superb administrator and a recognized scholar,” Levin said. “In such a short time at Yale, Dean Chopp led a planning effort focusing on curriculum and community life, expanded efforts in development and alumni affairs, and reorganized the areas of finance, facilities and human resources. She also helped to achieve the renewal of the affiliation agreement with the Berkeley Divinity School earlier this year.”

Chopp stated, “When Colgate contacted me, leaving Yale at this time was the furthest thing from my mind. Colgate is so impressive and dynamic, however, that I am compelled to accept the invitation to become president. It was a hard call since I think Yale is the leading theological school in this country and probably in the world. I have been honored to be part of positioning the Yale Divinity School for its vibrant future.”

Before coming to Yale, Chopp served as provost at Emory University.

Levin said he would be working with the faculty of the Divinity School this summer to appoint a successor to Chopp.
