Old Campus will echo once again with the sounds of children’s festivities on Saturday, April 20 during Communiversity Day, organized by the Yale chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, the national co-educational service fraternity, and cosponsored by Dwight Hall at Yale and Yale’s Office of New Haven Affairs.
The event, geared for families with children ages 7 - 13, will take place this year on Yale’s Old Campus bounded by College, Chapel, High and Elm streets from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Every child is sure to find something exciting among the many free activities taking place during this year’s theme of “Celebrating Differences Together.”
This year’s offerings feature a Community Action Bazaar, Kid’s Carnival, a book-making and giveaway table, flag-making, face-painting, a sports clinic and entertainment provided by a capella groups, bands and strolling performers.
Communiversity Day is the annual event organized by students that celebrates the strong relationship between New Haven and its hometown university of Yale’s relationship with New Haven. It is an extensive collaboration of many groups and organizations that represent culture and diversity in the city. Communiversity Day is one of the many ways that Yale opens its campus for the enjoyment of the community.
Each year, more than half a million people visit Yale’s campus and its four museums, and attend the many concerts, lectures and events such as Communiversity Day. More than 10,000 public school students use the Yale Art Gallery, Center for British Art and the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History annually. Many New Haven youngsters participate in Yale’s National Youth Sports Program, a free summer athletic program held on the Yale campus. Most Yale events and concerts are free and open to the public year round.
