Talk on Forest Management in India

The director of the Tata Energy Research Institute School of Advanced Studies in India will discuss "People's Participation in Forest Management in India: A Case Study from Shiwaliksî," on Monday, April 8, at 4 p.m. in Bowers Auditorium at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The director of the Tata Energy Research Institute School of Advanced Studies in India will discuss “People’s Participation in Forest Management in India: A Case Study from Shiwaliksî,” on Monday, April 8, at 4 p.m. in Bowers Auditorium at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The talk is free and open to the public.

T.P. Singh, who has devoted over 23 years of his career to the Indian Forest Service, will describe the growth of people’s involvement in managing forests jointly with the government, with particular focus on a case study from the Shiwalik hill range of Haryana, a state in India.

Singh has served as the assistant inspector general of forests for forest policy and as the national project coordinator for the development of the National Forestry Action Plan as a member of India’s Ministry of Environment and Forests. He also served as senior fellow in the forestry and biodiversity area of the Tata Energy Research Institute in New Delhi. From 1993 to 1997, he was conservator of forests and regional director for social forestry for the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department.

He is a member of several committees and task forces constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, lead author of several reports prepared for the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, and the author of several national and international publications. He is a member of the International Society of Tropical Foresters, Society of Indian Foresters, Society for Advances in Biosciences, and Commonwealth Forestry Association

He holds a D.Phil. in botany from Garhwal University, an associateship (equivalent to an M.Sc degree) from Indian Forest College, and an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in botany from Delhi University.
