J. Crew Opens For Business on Broadway
J. Crew, one of the most popular retailers in America, became the newest addition to the vibrant Broadway retail district with a grand opening held at 10 a.m. today.
“This is a ringing endorsement of the health and growing popularity of downtown New Haven,” said Bruce Alexander, vice president and director of Yale University’s Office of New Haven Affairs and University Properties. “The Broadway retail district is now attracting shoppers from the entire region. There is ample parking and evening hours, food, entertainment and many unique local merchants.”
The store, housed in a 6,240-square-foot space in a new building developed by Yale’s University Properties as part of Yale’s community investment program, will operate until 9 p.m. six days a week and until 5 p.m. on Sunday. The store is one of only two dozen located on street-level storefront rather than in a mall. They offer a wide range of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, shoes, accessories and personal care. Launched in 1983, the company began as a line of men’s and women’s sportswear sold through its award-winning catalog. The company also revolutionized casual dress in America by designing the first stone-washed chino, the roll neck sweater and the solid cotton pocket-T in a wide range of unexpected colors, now all staples of American sportswear.
