Symposium on Man and Beast Has Been Cancelled

The Yale Whitney Humanities Center has canceled “Man and Beast,” a symposium scheduled for December 7-8, owing to the sudden death on December 2 of the symposium’s originator, Naomi Schor.

The symposium was to have gathered scholars from many disciplines to consider such questions as what makes humans different from other animals, what all members of the animal kingdom have in common and whether non-human animals are entitled to human rights.

A prominent and respected scholar of French literature and critical theory and a pioneer theorist in the field of feminism, Schor was the Benjamin F. Barge Professor of French at Yale.
