Yale School of Medicine Students Sponsor Community Health Fair, "Healthy Haven 2001"

The Yale School of Medicine chapters of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and Boricua Latino Health Organization (BLHO) will co-sponsor a community health fair titled “Healthy Haven 2001” on Saturday, November 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chapel Square Mall, 900 Chapel Street.

Yale physicians, medical students, public health students and representatives from state health organizations will be on hand to perform a range of free medical services, including pediatric height/weight assessment, blood pressure screening, cholesterol screening, nutritional counseling, breathing assessment and ear, nose and throat evaluations. The fair will also feature arts and crafts projects and face painting in the “Kid’s Corner.”

Jesse James, a Yale School of Medicine student and one of the fair’s organizers, said that one of the objectives of both the SNMA and the BLHO is to cooperate with national initiatives that promote the health and well-being of ethnic minorities. “Both organizations seek to address the disparities in the availability of healthcare to minorities through education and empowerment of those communities,” he said.
