Father Bryan Hehir, Head of Harvard Divinity School, to Speak at Yale on Sunday

Bryan Hehir, who is chief administrator of Harvard Divinity School, will give a talk, “Order, War and Terror: Establishing Moral Relationships,” at Yale’s Battell Chapel on Sunday, October 28, at 7 p.m.

The talk is the fourth event in a weekly lecture and discussion series, “Democracy, Security and Justice: Perspectives on the American Future,” which was initiated by members of the Yale faculty as a response to the attack of September 11. The series opened on October 2 with an address by former U.S. Senator and national security adviser Gary Hart. The most recent guest speaker in the series was Michael Rubin, a journalist and expert on the Middle East.

Father Hehir is the head of the Harvard Divinity School, where he has been teaching courses on ethics, politics and international relations since 1992. Previous to joining the faculty at Harvard, he served in Washington at the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops and at Georgetown University. At the Conference of Bishops, he was variously director of the Office of International Affairs, secretary of the Department of Social Development and World Peace and counselor for social policy. At Georgetown, he was the Joseph P. Kennedy Professor of Christian Ethics in the School of Foreign Service at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. His writing and research engage issues of ethics, foreign policy and international relations, as well as Catholic social ethics and the role of religion in world politics. Recent courses he has taught at Harvard have covered such topics as bioethics and the political and moral criteria for the use of military force.

Through November 4, lectures in the “Democracy, Security and Justice” series will take place on Sunday evening, 7 p.m., at Battell Chapel. All events are free and open to the public.
