Yale Hosts Community Meeting to Discuss Aftermath of September 11 Terrorist Attacks

The Yale Department of Psychiatry and the Child Study Center will sponsor “Community Meeting: Discussion of the Aftermath of September 11” on Friday, September 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Brady Auditorium, 310 Cedar St.

The meeting will be moderated by Department of Psychiatry chair Benjamin Bunney, M.D., the Charles B.G. Murphy Professor of psychiatry, pharmacology and neurobiology. Small group discussions led by faculty from the Department of Psychiatry and the Child Study Center will immediately follow the meeting at 2:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Hope Building directly across the street from Brady Auditorium.

The meeting is open to the Yale and New Haven-area communities. Various faculty members from the Department of Psychiatry and from the Yale Child Study Center will cover three topics: “Acute Reactions to Disaster and How They are Treated,” “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder” and “Children’s Reactions to Disaster and What to Tell Your Children.”

“At this time, we’re very aware of the fact that we are all going through this crisis together; individually and as a community,” said the meeting’s coordinator, Nancy Angoff, M.D., associate dean for student affairs. “Anything that Yale can do to draw on its expertise in psychiatry and child development to help us better deal with our own feelings and reactions, and those of our patients and loved ones including our children, is very welcome.”
