Yale to Host Lecture on Human Rights Abuses Against Women and Girls Faced by Missionaries in China

Yale University Divinity School will host a lecture by historian Jessie G. Lutz titled “Mission Dilemmas: Bride Price, Minor Marriage, Concubinage, Infanticide and the Education of Women” on July 13 at 5 p.m. in Marquand Chapel, 409 Prospect Street.

The talk is this year’s Day Lecture, sponsored by the Edward and Olivia Hotchkiss Day Associates, an organization of friends of the Yale Divinity Library. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the Day Missions Reading Room.

Lutz earned her Ph.D. in Chinese history from Cornell University. She is professor emeritus of history at Rutgers University and author of numerous books on Chinese history and Christianity. Her most recent publication, co-authored with R.R. Lutz, is “Hakka Chinese Confront Protestant Christianity, 1850-1900.” The two are currently writing a biography of the German missionary Karl Gutzlaff.
