The Yale Faculty Practice has formally changed its name to the “Yale Medical Group,” after considering a variety of factors, including a change in the function, governance and purpose of the organization.

“In the past several years, the faculty practice has evolved to become a more organized academic medical group,” said Yale Medical Group Director, David Leffell, M.D., professor of dermatology and surgery, and senior associate dean for clinical activity. “We believe it’s important to ensure that our faculty and staff are properly recognized by patients and referring physicians. Our name should clearly convey who and what we are, highlight our reputation as a unique physician organization and express the breadth and depth of our medical expertise.”

Leffell said research indicated few people understood that the organization represents direct patient care by university physicians. “The words, ‘faculty practice’ suggested to some people that care was delivered by individuals such as interns and residents who were practicing to become physicians,” Leffell said. “The new name conveys a clear message about our academic medical group and the clinical care that we provide.”

The new name will go along with a redesigned logo, which will appear in print and other venues over the next few months.

“We believe that our new name and logo help us strengthen our reputation as a unique physician practice organization,” said Stephen Rimar, M.D., medical director of the Yale Medical Group. “Over time, we expect the logo will be identified in our region with clinical excellence.”

The Yale Medical Group is one of the largest specialized academic medical group practices in the United States. The full-time Yale School of Medicine faculty are affiliated with Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Members of the Yale Medical Group represent some of the most renowned physicians and surgeons in the world. Clinical services are organized into 17 clinical departments and nearly 100 subspecialty areas covering the full spectrum of adult and pediatric services.

The vast array of services and access to the finest medical and surgical professionals in the region have made Yale Medical Group a major referral center for patients from Fairfield and Westchester counties, as well as New Jersey, Long Island, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Fifty-nine Yale Medical Group physicians were recently named as the best physicians in major specialties in the 2000 edition of “How to Find the Best Doctors: New York Metro Area.”
