The Yale School of Medicine’s department of psychiatry will celebrate 50 years of achievement on Friday, Oct. 23, with a one-day symposium titled “A Half Century of Excellence: Yale Psychiatry from 1948 to 1998.”
The symposium will highlight the major role that the Yale department has played in expanding knowledge about psychiatric issues over the years.
Invited speakers will include Dr. Robert J. Lifton, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, who will present a talk titled “Contemporary Apocalyptic Violence Q The Case of Aum Shinrikyo”; and Dr. Bruce S. McEwen, professor and head of the Harold and Margaret Milliken Hatch Laboratory of Neuroendocrinology at Rockefeller University, who will discuss “Sex, Stress and the Hippocampus: From Basic Research to Practical Applications.”
Also featured will be presentations by faculty from the psychiatry department, including Drs. Larry Davidson, George Heninger, Selby Jacobs, Marina Picciotto, Bruce Rounsaville, Herbert Sachs and William D. Sledge.
Morning sessions will be held 8:30-11 a.m. at the Connecticut Mental Health Center auditorium, 34 Park St. Afternoon sessions will take place 1-5 p.m. in Rm. 216 of the Jane Ellen Hope Building, 315 Cedar St. All members of the Yale community are welcome to attend these lectures.
The celebration will conclude at 6:30 p.m. with the Chairman’s Dinner at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Ave. The keynote speaker will be Dr. David Kessler, dean of the School of Medicine and former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, who will present an update on the “Tobacco Wars.” Seating at the dinner is limited; therefore pre-registration is required.
