ISPS and Yale Hillel to Host Bioethics Seminar Series
The Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS) at Yale and Yale Hillel will jointly sponsor a seminar series on “Bioethics and Public Policy” during the 1998-99 academic year. The series, focused on medicine, genetics and the environment, will consider the complex ethical issues that arise from recent advances in science and technology.
Each speaker will present a seminar at noon at ISPS, 77 Prospect St., and a public lecture at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St., at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow the evening lecture. Speakers and topics are:
* Wednesday, Sept. 16. Ellen Messer (Brown University, Thomas J. Watson Jr. Institute for International Studies), “Can Agrobiotechnology Solve the Problem of World Hunger?”
* Wednesday, Oct. 21. George Annas (Boston University, Department of Health Law), “Better Living Through Chemistry: What Viagra, Prozac and Marijuana Have in Common.”
* Wednesday, Nov. 18. Arthur W. Westing (Westing Associates in Environment, Security and Education), “Environmental Values in Peace and War.”
* Wednesday, Dec. 9. Alvin Novick (Yale, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), “Ethics and Public Policy for the Disdained: Drug Dependency and AIDS.”
ISPS will offer additional seminars this year, including Yale AIDS Colloquium Series; Workshop on Religious Institutions and Society; Interdisciplinary Faculty Seminar on the Environment; Seminar on Race, Inequality and Politics; Political Theory Workshop; Scientific Research on Sexual Orientation and Its Implications; Program on Non-Profit Organizations; Health Policy Seminar; and the Agrarian Studies Colloquium Series.
