On Thursday, Oct. 23, the Women’s Campaign School at Yale will host 40 fifth graders for a “Students’ Day in Hartford.” Participants will include pupils from Toquam School in Stamford and Longfellow School in Bridgeport.
The Women’s Campaign School, which is affiliated with the Yale Law School and the Yale Women’s Studies Program, offers training courses in political campaigning. “Students’ Day in Hartford” is the school’s first effort to reach out to Connecticut youth.
“The goal of the program,” says Allyson Serxner Stollenwerck, the program coordinator and a delegate to the Women’s Campaign School Board of Directors, “is to inspire youngsters to remain politically active and aware throughout their lives.”
The students will spend the first part of their morning watching Lieutenant Governor Jodi Rell and State Comptroller Nancy Wyman in action. They will tour offices, meet staffs, and observe how the two women conduct business. Afterward, there will be a general question and answer session with Ms. Rell and Ms. Wyman, followed by a tour of the capitol building with a guide from the League of Women Voters.
“The best example we can set for our children is our work ethic and our desire to learn,” notes Ms. Wyman. “I am delighted that these students will be sharing those values with our outstanding staff.”
