Yale University Will Announce Major Federal Grant To Create Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS

Several of Connecticut’s elected representatives will be on hand Monday to participate in an announcement about a major federal grant received by Yale University to create and support a Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS. The mission of the Center will be to conduct research aimed at preventing HIV infection and reducing the harmful consequences of AIDS in vulnerable and underserved populations.

When: Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

Where: Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health – EPH, 60 College St., New Haven. Public parking is available in the Air Rights Garage, 20 York St..

Who: Attending will be Yale President Richard C. Levin, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Senators Christopher J. Dodd and Joseph I. Lieberman and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro. Also attending will be Dr. David Kessler, dean of the Yale School of Medicine, and Dr. Michael H. Merson, dean of Public Health and Professor and Chairman of EPH, along with federal and local health officials.

The Center represents a major initiative involving experts in six Yale professional schools who are working together with primary-care providers and community-based AIDS organizations not only in New Haven but in other Connecticut communities. Initially, the focus of the multi-year program will be primarily on Connecticut teens, women and injection drug users – populations in which HIV infections are still increasing at an alarming rate in the United States.
