Yale alumni clubs and associations across America and in Hong Kong are sponsoring 32 Yale students this summer for community service work. Providing the students with summer stipends frees them from having to work at regular jobs, letting them volunteer for good causes instead.

The Association of Yale Alumni AYA Community Service Summer Fellowship program supports students of Yale College, graduate, and professional schools for eight weeks as volunteers with community-based organizations. Fellows are paid stipends to equal what they need to earn to meet their financial aid obligations to the University, plus a small expense allowance.

The program began in 1990 with 13 students sponsored by nine alumni clubs. Its aim is to enrich the educational experience of students who wish to volunteer for community service as well as encourage Yale Clubs and Alumni Associations to seek out community needs and match them with the services Yale students can provide.

Alumni clubs provide the funds for each Fellow’s stipend, arrange housing since students are rarely placed in their own hometown , and serve as local contacts during the summer. Each student is given an on-site supervisor who provides the alumni club with details of the project to be completed by the Fellow in advance, and supervises the Fellow during his or her stay. The following are this summer’s AYA Fellows, projects, and sponsors.
