Advisory: Yale University's Peabody Museum to Announce Major Grant To Strengthen Science Programs with New Haven Public Schools

A news conference will be held Thursday, July 17, to announce that the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History will work with the New Haven Public Schools, L.E.A.P. – Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership, and the Eli Whitney Museum on a program to strengthen scientific literacy among the city’s schoolchildren. The community effort is being funded by a major four-year grant.

Also collaborating on the grant are the Yale Office of New Haven Affairs – ONHA – and the Yale Child Study Center.

When: Thursday, July 17, at 1 p. m.

Where: Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave., Great Hall of Dinosaurs.

Who: Speakers will include Jacques Gauthier, curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Peabody, and professor of geology and geophysics; Linda Koch Lorimer, vice president and secretary of Yale, and director of the ONHA; Reginald Mayo, Ph.D., superintendent of New Haven Public Schools; and Henry J. Fernandez, L.E.A.P. executive director

The goal of the program is to educate and excite New Haven students about the diversity of nature, and to generate knowledge, understanding, and a positive attitude toward scientific inquiry. The grant provides new resources for the Peabody Museum to fulfill its educational mission, and strengthens ongoing formal efforts by the museum’s educators to teach schoolchildren about earth’s history and the natural world.
