International Conference on Ukrainian Economics

Yale University will host a two-day conference, May 16 and 17, to examine Ukraine’s economy during the past five years of independence. Sponsored by the Council on Russian and East European Studies and the Program in International Development Economics at Yale, with support from the Chopivsky Family Foundation, the meeting will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in Luce Hall Auditorium, 34 Hillhouse Avenue. All sessions are free and open to the public.

“We hope that the conference will be more than a retrospective on the events of the past five years,” says Professor Robert Evenson, director of the Program in International Development Economics at Yale. “This conference is planned as a constructive step in the quest for solutions to the economic problems that continue to affect Ukraine.”

International academic and policy experts scheduled to speak at the conference include Daniel Kaufmann, head of the World Bank’s mission in Kiev; Anders Aslund, transition economies expert for The Brookings Institution; Ihor Shumylo, macroeconomic strategist for the Ministry of Economics of Ukraine; Vladimir Kuznetsov, executive advisor to the President of Ukraine, and others. Yuri Shcherbak, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, will give a keynote address. Faculty members from Harvard, Swarthmore, and Iowa State University, will speak.
