The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, one of the Royal Academies of Sweden, is an independent, non-governmental scientific organization that promotes the sciences. Among other duties, it is a selection board for international prizes such as the Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry.

“This is a tremendous honor for John, as he joins other foreign members at Yale, including Steve Girvin (the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics & Applied Physics), Peter Crane (the Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Dean of the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and professor of botany), and Peter Jones (the James E. English Professor of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics)” said Jay Ague, the Henry Barnard Davis Professor and chair of Geology & Geophysics.

“This is a splendid surprise and a great honor to have been elected,” Wettlaufer said. “I very much look forward to a long and engaged participation in the Academy.”
