Keeping Yale cool in the summer — sustainably

When Yale feels the heat during the summer, it is the university’s chillers and cooling towers — and the staff members who run and maintain them — that keep campus buildings comfortable. On the Medical Campus, the job of delivering the chilled water for air conditioning most offices, labs, and classrooms is handled by the Sterling Power Plant; on West Campus, it is done by the Central Utility Plant; and on Central Campus, it is the responsibility of the Central Power Plant and the Central Campus Chiller Plant. YaleNews recently paid a visit to the latter to take a look at its operations.
