The Music in Schools Initiative

Yale Art Gallery Program. Students visited the Yale Art Gallery where they observed and heard discussions about original works of Chinese art. The lesson was accompanied by live Chinese music performed on traditional instruments, and while they listened to the music, the students illustrated their interpretations of what they heard.
Yale Center for British Art Program. After an introduction to Indian music, students visited the Center where they observed and heard discussions about original works of Indian art. The lesson was accompanied by live Chinese music performed on traditional instruments, and while they listened to the music, the students illustrated their interpretations of what they heard.
Chinese Cultural Concert. A troupe of Chinese dancers performed as part of a cultural concert for school children at Sprague Hall.
Eli Whitney Violin Program. Partnering with the Eli Whitney Museum, students learned how to build and play music on basic violins, and also learned a little about the science of acoustics—how sound is produced on a violin.
Music and Art Writing Program at John C. Daniels School. Young learners engage in a creative writing activity through the inspiration of art and music. Students view a piece of artwork – a portrait, sculpture, etc – and write about their visual interpretation through the influence of music.

The All-City Band is a collaborative venture of the Yale School of Music and New Haven Public Schools. It is one of several projects to grow out of Yale's Music in Schools Initiative, a multifaceted program underwritten by the Yale College Class of 1957 to improve the teaching of arts in public schools.
