Two hundred years ago legendary French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte was soundly defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. The decisive victory for England became a source of national pride and made a hero out of the Duke of Wellington. A British soldier-artist, George Jones, recognized an opportunity to combine his talents and producd a series of paintings on the subject, earning him the moniker, "Waterloo Jones." Four studies for Jones's Waterloo paintings live at the Yale Center for British Art, offering a glimpse into Jones's practice, attention to detail, and interest in atmosphere and landscape, not unlike his friend and fellow painter, J.M.W. Turner.
