‘Julia’s Run’ to raise funds for children

Julia’s Run for Children, an annual fund-raising event that also commemorates former Yale student Julia Rusinek, will be held on Sunday, April 9.

The race will begin and end on Cross Campus. Registration, bib and t-shirt pickup will be held 8-9:45 a.m. at Woolsey Hall, 500 College St. A “Fun Run” of  0.7 miles for children ages 12 and under will be held at 9:30 a.m. The main run/walk of four miles will begin at 10 a.m. An awards ceremony, with refreshments and a raffle, will be held after the race.

Rusinek was a 21-year-old Yale sociology student and an accomplished runner. She died of an undetected heart condition on July 15, 1999. The Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, was established to celebrate the life of Rusinek and honor the ideals for which she lived.

Until April 8, pre-registration fees are $22 per adult runner, $17 per student runner, and $9 per Fun Run participant. Runners can pre-register by mail or online. To pre-register by mail, download the registration form (PDF), fill it out, and mail it with payment to: Julia Rusinek Memorial Fund, 2 West Dr., Great Neck, NY 11021.

All proceeds from Julia’s Run will go to Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP). The organization trains New Haven college and public high school students to work with younger children, providing a literacy-based curriculum as well as classes in the arts, computer science, swimming, athletics, camping, cooking, and team building.
