The two organizations established the award to “recognize and celebrate an outstanding director of medical student education in ophthalmology.” Given to only one individual each year, it is the sole national award that recognizes excellence in medical student teaching in ophthalmology.

Forster is the director of medical studies for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the School of Medicine and chief of the Ophthalmology Department at Yale HEALTH. In addition, she practices comprehensive ophthalmology at the Yale Eye Center. Her research interests focus on access to care and medical education. Nationally recognized in the field of medical education, Forster is the president of the American University Professors Organization’s Medical School Educators Council and has written articles and book chapters in the field of comprehensive ophthalmology.

The AUPO is composed of chairs in ophthalmology, residency program directors, directors of medical student education, and research in ophthalmology. It is the organization in the United States and Canada that represents academic ophthalmology. The AAO is the organization that represents ophthalmology in general.
